Since 2018, Art Cohn, associates, and partners have used the latest technology to probe some depths of some Finger Lakes in search of archaeological evidence related to the history of NYS canals, and anything else. This is a draft of a poster summarizing findings to date. Click anywhere on the poster to read it.
Art and his associates are “hard at work on the Seneca Lake Final Report, which predictable will be a 200 + page detailed presentation. We are hoping to have it completed by Spring 2025. It will report, amongst other things, that the shipwreck inventory for Seneca Lake will be in the neighborhood of the discovery and documentation of 44 (!!) intact 19th century canal boats, 10 small watercraft, 1 intact airplane and 1 steamboat with machinery in 600’ of water.”
More background on the project from a 2021 article by Museum Association of New York here.
