If you’ve ever driven NY 12 through Boonville, you might have seen canal lock structures high and dry and abandoned and wondered. The CSNY Study tour is taking a closer look. Here’s a quick report on Day 1 in the North Country.
This body of water is spectacular. Orientation remarks were provided by none other than the executive director of the Hudson River-Black River Regulating district, John Callaghan.
Here’s more on the reservoir. For a quick read on how the reservoir came to be, click here.
The modest concrete structure in the background is surface evidence of
a hydro-electric turbine, almost50 feet below.
The green roof at the bottom of the image was our starting point, and way beyond the reservoir is
a reminder that it is the second half of October…. That’s Mount Marcy, some 90 miles away.
After a stop at the Boonville Black River Canal Museum, a very worthwhile visit, CSNY’s board member Bruce Schwendy honored us with an overview of the day and
a preview of Day 2.
