Bottoming Out is the publication of the Canal Society of New York. It’s quite an impressive magazine, scholarly but also lively. The Fall-Winter 2024 issue just got to my mailbox. Memberhip in CSNY gets the magazine as well as other perks such as access to individuals with extensive knowledge about canals and opportunity to participate in field trips to canal sites.

If you’re wondering about the name of the magazine, see below.

Below is the table of contents for the latest issue . . .

and some sample pages. Replica canal schooner Lois McClure will figure prominently in activities later this spring.

New York State once had a much more extensive canal system than the one still navigable today. Quite a few photos from the CSNY collection shared to date on Dispatches relate to the Black River Canal, which connected the North Country and its products with the rest of the state and the East Coast. Maybe you’ve seen ruins of the canal while driving in the North Country.

Articles such as the one below help you see the past still with us.

CSNY is always seeking to preserve the history and traditions of New York’s canals as well as promoting ideas for continued revitalization and development among canal fans of all ages.
