F. L. Hislop’s attribution appears on a number of postcards from Palmyra dating to the first decade of the 20th century. I’ve not found anything about him in internet searches. Among the postcards I’ve found, this one is unique in that it shows a canal scene rather than a street scene. To our good fortune, notations give not only Hislop’s name but also identifies the canal-side building. Crandall was a business partner of Nichols and Garlock. Later the firm became known–and is known to this day–as Garlock, a company with a 135-year history. Their product has long been packing, as in piston rod packing seals.

Someone more familiar with the canal in Palmyra might be able to photograph this scene as it appears today. Might that be where the Division Street Bridge is located today and we’re looking west? Here from FB is the Crandall Packing factory seen–I believe–from the street side.

Can anyone help?
