I don’t know if this is a post-washout scene, spring meltwaters going awry and taking out a bridge. No leaves adorn the trees, a utility pole askew nearly touches the bank, the banks on lower right look scoured by rushing water, and all those people appear to be surveying the scene.

Can you count 10 people, most of them with hands in pockets. Might some of them hold positions of authority?

Bridge abutment?

I do not know the story, so I’m making up a plausible narrative, but I’d love to know if facts exist.

As washouts or breaches were not uncommon, it is definitely a bank collapse. The people looking at the damage are likely a mix of workmen from the canal and townspeople.

  2. It looks like the spectators over on the right are standing at the gates to a lock.
