Some folks from over a half century ago were fishing at E-8. Note the crane on the far side of the moveable dam.

Meanwhile at least one person was working on the gate puller. Am I correct in calling the gate puller on tracks a mule? Again, note the crane to the right.

In what appears to be the same day, the gentleman in the red shirt is paying attention, if not using his hands. In the foreground, note the fuel cylinder and hose in the foreground.

And here he has been drawn into the job.

Maybe someone can explain what work is being facilitated by the heat.

The date of these photos is late 1950s, so maybe someone reading this can identify either of these canal workers, as well as what work is being done.

  1. My guess is that they’re softening up hardened grease with the blowtorch so the guy in the blue shirt can gradually clean off the chain with that tool in his left hand. In a few of the pictures it looks like the guy in the red shirt is also in charge of starting and stopping the hoist so that different links can be exposed.
