Here’s the Lyons Drydock in November 2022, viewing toward the east. Note the current tugboat Syracuse in the foreground. Maybe some of you can identify the other vessels being floated in at that moment; the event was the end of the season and winter layup.

    There are still seats available for the Erie Canal Bicentennial Bus Tour and Cruise, don’t miss your chance to be part of this special one-day celebration hosted by the Canal Society of New York State.

    Date: Wednesday, August 27, 2025Departure: 8:30 AM from the Samuel Center for Canal History (38 Rochester Street, Port Byron, NY)Return: Approximately 5:30 PM

    This day trip features guided stops at canal landmarks, and culminates in a three-hour narrated cruise aboard the Colonial Belle, complete with lunch.

    Highlights Include:

    • A behind-the-scenes visit to the Canal Corporation’s 1930s-era shop and drydock in Lyons, including the historic 1909 steam-powered Dipper Dredge 3
    • A stop in Palmyra to explore:
      • Lock 29 of the Erie Barge Canal
      • The 1857 Ganargua Creek Aqueduct
      • The heroic restoration of the 1858 Aldrich Change Bridge
    • A visit to Erie Canal Adventures in Macedon to hear the Wiles family’s inspiring story of building a marina and canal hireboat fleet
    • Special guest speakers at each stop sharing fascinating insights
    • A scenic cruise on the Colonial Belle departing Fairport at 1 PM with lunch included
