CSNY archives from the late 1950s/early 1960s feature lots of photos juxtaposing the Canal, boats, and cars. Here’s an example: this looks like lock E8, some adventuresome boys being locked through, a cabin cruiser getting lots of attention, and then behind the lock office . . . a car. It’s a very 1960s car, a 1960 Corvair.

From my personal archives, a photo I took above lock E17 at the Little Falls Canal Harbor in September 2014, a late 1960s Corvair on the bulhead alongside the always classic tugboat Urger. Arguably, Corvairs are classics, a US experiment with rear-engine design.

Since I’m dipping into my personal archives here, how about this photo of Urger visited by a circa 2014 Chevrolet Tahoe police cruiser between locks O-2 and O-3 on the Oswego Canal in Fulton? Can you do better? For the record, it was a friendly visit.

While we’re looking at classics of the Canal, one more here: BB 109 and Urger just above lock O-7 in Vischers Ferry.

More classic Canal photos with cars to come. If you’ve taken your own photos of a classic car juxtaposed with Canal landmarks–summer or winter–please send them along to this blog.

While I have your attention, the CSNY Winter Symposium is coming up on Saturday March 7, 2026, at Monroe Community College in Rochester NY. See the program here. at the bottom of that page is a more detailed program. Register online here.
