The Canal Society’s upcoming Fall tour is scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday, September 29/30. Stay tuned to this blog for registration and additional materials.  Reach out to Craig asap to ensure a seat!

We will be headquartered in Little Falls, NY. Special events will include a cruise on the Lil’ Diamond along one of the most scenic portions of the Erie Canal, including the awesome Barge Canal Lock 17, shown below. See this article about Lock 17 written by Craig.

Look carefully at the image. More information follows.

Below is a zoomed-in view. The structure to the right of the long stairs is in fact the wheelhouse of self-propelled grain transport Carswego.

To mark the 250th anniversary, the bus tour will be visiting Revolutionary War sites along with historic canal structures. The Mohawk Valley has many connections with the Revolution, and a full list of sites we will visit is forthcoming.

The image above shows lock 17 in an earlier time… with one of the last unique Cargill grain barges going through lock 17, back when its side basin was still in service. See other images of lock 17 from its downstream end here and–especially–here.
