Thanks to John Hinckley for passing this photo along to me some time back. It shows two barges, a small boat, and a canoe in the Federal Lock.

Barge M. A. Lenahan, a W. E. Hedger Transportation barge, has another in front of it, and a small powerboat Whale and canoe nearest in the image. I can’t make out the name of the barge farthest from the camera.

Can anyone add some info about the lift bridge in the distance?

Many thanks to John for passing along this image, said to be from the Galloway [?] set. Photographer and date are unknown, although the barge is mentioned in a 1944 lawsuit here.

      Thanks, Bill, for posting that. I love that Erie Canal story. Somewhere I read an expanded account that mentioned that the admission fee to see the “mammoth whale” decreased the farther west in the system Capt. Nickerson got. Have you any idea where the “tour” ended and what became of the remains?
