Parks and Trails New York describes the events of next week as “discover[ing] the charm and history of upstate New York, a scenic ride [along] one of America’s most iconic waterways—through quaint canal towns, the peaceful countryside . . . blending outdoor adventure, small-town hospitality, and centuries of history into one unforgettable journey across the Empire State.”
Let’s capture that experience for posterity, juxtaposing iconic waterway scenery with throngs of cyclists coming from near and far. Click on the image below to see the route for each day next week.

Attached are a few photos I took [or asked others to take on me] on my own unsupported bike ride across the state from October 4 to October 11, 2020.

Placing yourself near a landmark identifies where the photo was taken.

This was just west of lock 28B in Newark, but the boat in the mural is iconic.

I had lunch here on day 3, pulled pork from a local market.

What were the chances of meeting a former Urger captain on the trail in Utica!

The viaducts east of Little Falls are surely iconic.

No identifying landmarks here, but I really needed a break, but was it in Fort Plain, or was it Fultonville?

By Niskayuna, it was feeling downhill.

And upon arrival in Waterford, where a farmer’s market was happening, I donned a mask, because it was 2020 after all.

Whether you’re a cyclist or just visiting your favorite stretch of the canal, share your “cycle the Erie Canal” photos and/or stories by sending to canalsocietyofnysphotos@gmail.com.
I will be photographing on day 4 but not riding.
