You met Quincy, a modern-day celebrity dog/overseer a week and a half ago here. You may have wondered what Quincy saw. As a follow-up to that post, we have Quincy’s permission to share that as well as more winter maintenance activity at Lock 30 in Macedon. A lot of work goes into keeping a waterway beginning its third century open. Watchwords include “be safe always while assessing.”

Cranes arrive on scene to lower materials, tools, and PPE-clad workers into the lock chamber.

It’s been an old-fashioned winter: short days, cold temperatures, inconvenient winds, and lake-effect snow.

Although the lock chamber is “dry,” sectional barges are lowered to have a safe and level platform for the work.

Canal maintenance workers of the past, like Johnny from this July 2025 post, would look this work set-up with amazement, envy, and approval.

When the sectional barges are in place, heavier equipment is lowered. Contrast this machine with the heavy machinery used in the past, from this April 2025 post.

This is some of what Quincy was overseeing.

Many thanks to Seaway Marine Group for sharing these photos.

Today is the last day to ensure getting a seat at the March 7 CSNY Winter Symposium. Details here.
