Many thanks to Bill Hecht for sharing this photo of Hiawatha, said taken at Salt Point, near Lansing NY on the east side of Cayuga Lake. Any wagers about the approximate era of the photo? Answer follows.

Here’s another shot from Bill of the same vessel, but with benches on the stern and additional people on the deck, including

a woman. What might have been the occasion?

Also from Bill, this scene of workers loading a barge.

The box cars have “Empire Line” stenciled on a sliding door.

Might the differences in dress reflect who is with the Empire Line, who is with the barge, and who might be bystanders?

My guess is that the tugboat is the 1903 Tottenville NY vessel.

From the Dryden Herald of October 11, 1911, this was the demise of Hiawatha. She shows up in the 1912 MVUS but not the 1913 edition, possibly evidence that the 1912 edition was already in print before the catastrophic fire.

Cargill De-icing Technology facility is still location south of Lansing NY.

  1. The Hiawatha is a really nice-looking steam tug!

I found the Empire Line boxcars very interesting. Empire Line was part of the Pennsylvania Railroad, interesting to find them at Lansing as this was not on PRR lines. Railroad in Lansing was the Lehigh Valley RR. Interchange of freight cars was not uncommon back in those days but perhaps not as prevalent as in later days? Are the bags being handled, salt? Would the salt be from Lansing or perhaps over on the west side of Seneca Lake where the Pennsylvania RR operated and serviced salt mines in the area of Watkins Glen?

Below is Wiki link to a brief history of the Empire Line (Empire Transportation Company).

Shortline railroad Ithaca Central (formerly Lehigh Valley RR mentioned above) currently services the Cargill salt plant in Lansing/Ludlowville, NY but has no water service.

The Pennsylvania RR side on Seneca Lake has shortline company, Finger Lakes Railroad that services salt mines in the Watkins Glen area.

    Thanks for an interesting post.

    1. Eric- Thanks for responding to the post. You raise some good questions that I hope someone answers. Maybe we can unearth more images too.
